Chang Yim (Smiling Elephant) project was established by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to eliminate the use of elephants roaming the streets of Bangkok and then again in its natural environment or in close proximity to it. The BMA is asking for the task at mahouts in Bangkok that drive these gentle animals in town for the currencies and perform tricks for U.S. tourists.
City streets are no place for an elephant of all sizes. Only recently, an elephant was walkingthrough the city of Rayong when it stepped into an open manhole. fortunately the baby elephant was rescued, without harm, after a few hours and with the help of a bulldozer to dig a pit big enough for him to walk out of. Unfortunately the Baby elephant gets to go back to it's life of slavery begging for money.
The Chang Yim project in Bangkok aims to remove all elephants from Bangkok within one year. They made their first big step yesterday with the purchase of Pang Bua Kham, a 30 year old elephant who is blind in one eye. Owner of Bua Kham Pang, a mahout Bangkok has been paid, 300,000 baht (about $ 8000.00) for the elephants, which are carried at the National Elephant Institute in Lampang, where they live the rest of the day in a quiet environment. The hope is that some elephants, at least the younger ones are reintroduced into their natural habitat, while the older elephants are suitable houses in places like Elephant NationalInstitute.
The BMA have the view that most of the roaming elephants in Bangkok by their owners for 300,000 baht to be purchased and furnished for that purpose, to accept a bank account with Krungthai Bank for donations to this cause. In little over a week, the bank account of 800,000 baht (about $ 24.000,00).
Clearly this is a small solution to a problem much bigger. Elephants are used in all major cities by their owners to earn their living through tourist dollars.Hopefully, the BMA will be in Bangkok, efforts will be successful and catch on in other cities, this problem is finally a thing of the past. To date there are more stories like the story of the little elephant and sad that, like the elephant in the last week have died in the province of Chonburi, if they live a low-hanging power line went, and was electrified.
